     STORY of the Week:

The Beginner II

Well it was the summer of 2002. I had just got my first fly rod. I was inexperienced to say the least but had a longing to learn how to fly fish. I had seen my brother in law out on the rivers in Idaho and desperately wanted to learn what he was doing. I had seen some of the rewards that he would come home with. So now it was my turn and after a little instruction on how to cast using a fly rod I ventured to the mountain to do some stream fishing. I was driving up to the middle fork river just outside of Boise Idaho. As I followed the stream I could see the rocks on the bottom of the river when I finally came to a small bend in the river where it seemed to be much deeper. I stopped my truck and set up camp. I then made my way out to a nice rock to stand on that was about 35 feet in front of this nice deep pool. Using my Pfluggler (not sure about the spelling) fly rod 5wt. I tied on a nymph. I made three nice casts and then let my fly lay right in the middle of this pool as I gave my line some slack. Within 5 or so minutes Bang fish on!!! I let my fly reel squeal and as I started to reel in my catch I noticed that it wasn't a huge fish but not bad for my first time out. Nice little rainbow about 14 inches and about 13oz. Well I must have caught and released several that day and only kept a few decent sized ones. It was a great first time experience catching trout...
